In honor of treasured  dance icon Bessie Schonberg, the 2011 Bessie Award Ceremony for Dance and Performance takes place at Harlem’s world famous Apollo Theater. This year’s ceremony will be hosted by Bebe Neuwirth. Choreographer Trisha Brown, a New York City modern dance pioneer who started her company in 1970, will receive the Bessie Award for Lifetime Achievement. Frederick Franklin, a ballet master who began his career with Josephine Baker,  receives the Bessie Award for Service to the Field of Dance, and finally Spanish Harlem’s Violeta Galagarza, hip hop latin fusion choreographer and founder of KR3Ts, aka. Keep Rising to the Top,  receives the Bessie Award for Special Achievement in Dance.

This year’s award ceremony takes place as Terpsichore merges with the Sun in Scorpio, both at the Aires point! The passion, depth, and power of dance is honored in the spotlight of the  creative spirit. Having just entered Scorpio from Libra, the pairing of Terpsichore and the Sun bond with fierce  intimacy, like Margot Fonteyn and Rudolf Nureyev entwined in the passionate ecstasy of life as their steps transcend their bodies.

The dance world, like many other art forms, is going through tremendous change. Tonight’s  homage to modern dance, ballet, and hip hop fusion covers the old and the  new while taking us to the edge of what lies ahead, with fresh inspiration. With the Sagittarius north node sitting with Bessie’s sun, the timing couldn’t be better.

With so many planets in Scorpio now, I can’t help but think of Pluto’s influence on dance. I imagine  the cultural roots of dance, when community came together to honor the gods, to lead others to the spiritual world, and to celebrate life. The Bessies is today’s dance celebratory ritual… bound to thrill while bringing dance zealots to the edge of their seats~
